I grew up in a town of 500 people.
I’ve moved an awful lot since I packed up my P plated car and drove out of that place. But do you know what? No matter how many cities or country towns I’ve lived in, no matter how many people I have met, I’m yet to cross paths with anyone who has lived as these girls have lived. I’ve not met anyone who has endured such hard knocks and got up and got on with it like these girls do.
For a long time I forgot about the strength that is bred into us back there. I forgot that I was once surrounded by girls who stood up for themselves and said what they thought. I forgot that you can fall down repeatedly, but you can always get back up.
I forgot that you needn’t ever feel inferior or insecure or flawed.
I forgot to be confident and strong and to back myself.
But today I remembered.
I thought of them, those girls. Despite how infrequently we see each other we’re still friends today. I thought of their strength. I thought of all that they have been through and how proud I am of each and every one of them.
I thought of how much they would tease me for harping on about my stresses and worries. I imagined them telling me to get over it and get on with it.
And I was glad that they came into my mind right when they did, because their slap across my face was just what I needed.

- 1/4 cup raisins
- 1/4 cup dry roasted almonds
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- pinch of salt
- Place the ingredients into your processor and blend until the nuts are chopped and the mixture is well combined.
- Use your hands to shape the mixture into balls. Place the balls into the fridge to set and to store.
- Eat and enjoy.
*you can use rice malt syrup if you prefer.
Makes 12
note – I like to roll these small and eat them straight from the freezer. It isn’t for everyone but it is worth trying. Also, make sure you use a protein powder that you really like, otherwise they will not work out.
